KAILUA-KONA — No tsunami was triggered by a magnitude-4.5 earthquake Wednesday morning offshore of South Point, Ka’u.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the earthquake occurred at 10:09 a.m. about 16 miles southeast of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates. It had a registered depth of about 23 miles.
According to HVO Seismic Network Manager Brian Shiro, the deep earthquake was due to bending of the oceanic plate from the weight of the island and poses no significant hazard. The earthquake also had no apparent effect on Kilauea Volcano’s ongoing eruptions.
The U.S. Geological Survey, as of Wednesday afternoon, said it’s Did You Feel It? webpage had received 186 reports from residents that felt the temblor. The majority of those reports came from Naalehu and Kailua-Kona.
