KAILUA-KONA — The Kona district had the highest amount of DUI arrests during the week of July 10-16, police reported Tuesday.

KAILUA-KONA — The Kona district had the highest amount of DUI arrests during the week of July 10-16, police reported Tuesday.

Hawaii Police Department arrested a total of 22 motorists under the influence of an intoxicant across the island.

Arrests occurred in four districts including Kona. South Hilo had three arrests, Puna had four, Kona had 13 and South Kohala had two, Hawaii police reported.

So far this year, DUI arrests have increased 8.7 percent from last year with 634 arrests compared to last year’s 583 during the same period.

There have been 725 major accidents so far this year, compared with 779 during the same period last year – a 6.9 percent decrease from last year.

Fatal crashes have increased by 53.8 percent compared to last year.

To date, police say, 18 fatal crashes resulted in 20 fatalities – compared to last year with 12 fatal crashes resulting in 13 fatalities.
