Alexander Carriaga


Alexander “Squeaky” Robert Carriaga, 63, of Hilo, died Dec. 12, 2017, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Nov. 4, 1954, in Hilo, he was a former employee of HELCO and of the Hilo Coast Processing Co.

Visitation will be 6-7 p.m. Jan. 3 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo; 7 p.m. funeral service. Cremation to follow. A celebration of life will be noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 6 at the Papaikou Hongwanji. Casual attire and no flowers.

He is survived by sons, Shon (Sabrina Publico) Carriaga, Daison (Nemy) Carriaga, Alexander (Jesica Pacheco) Carriaga II and Alika Carriaga of Hilo; daughters, Andrea (Jose Luis) Palomo of Whittier, Calif., Roberta (Banyan Cate) Carriaga of Hilo and Katherine (Jacob) Puakea of Hilo; father, Mariano (Ethel) Carriaga Sr. of Hilo; brothers, Mariano (Darlene) Carriaga Jr. of Hilo, Mark (Beverly) Carriaga of Kailua-Kona, Carl (Pua) Carriaga of Hilo, Michael Pascual of Ocean View, Melvin Carter of Kona and Francis (Rochelle) Carter of Hilo; sisters, Jonnie Davis of Hilo, MarieElena (Dean) Rocha of Kona and MonaLisa Spalding of Hilo; one son-in-law; 11 grandchildren, numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

William Abraham

William “Blackie” Lani Abraham, 85, of Hilo, died Nov, 27, 2017, at home. Born in Hilo, was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, retired pin setter with the former Hilo Lanes, butcher with the Keaau Slaughterhouse/Miko Meat, roofer with Honolulu/Hilo Pacific Roofing and Flooring, security worker for the former Hawaii Protective Assn., and member of the Hawaiian Bowling Club and other bowling leagues.

Friends may call 6-9 p.m., Jan. 4 at the Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 7 p.m. wake service. Friends may also call 10-11 a.m., Jan. 5 at the chapel for an 11 a.m. funeral service. Burial to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Aloha/casual attire.

He is survived by his, sons, Willoughby (Desiree Raymond) Abraham of Hilo, William (Rebecca) Abraham Jr. of Kawaihae and Robert (Dee Dee) Abraham of Hilo; daughters, Corrina Abraham of Hilo, Lydia (Daniel) Abrojena of Kona and Sandra Dee (Robin) Young of Pahoa; hanai son, Thomas (Rose) Abraham of Hilo; hanai daughter, Star (David) Henderson of Hilo; brother, Harry (Bobbie) Kim of Hilo; sister, Ruth Papalimu of Hilo; 54 grandchildren, 45-great grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Clarence Pacheco Jr.

Clarence Victor Pacheco Jr., 56, of Hakalau died Dec. 14, 2017, at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Facility. He was born in Hilo and was a farmer.

Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Jan. 5 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a memorial gathering. Casual attire, no flowers.

He is survived by his mother, Emogene Pacheco of Hakalau; brother, Bertram (Tyanne Betar) Pacheco of Bridgeport, W. Va.; a nephew and a grand nephew.

Isaac Sylva Jr.

Isaac Sylva Jr., 65, of Kailua-Kona, died Dec. 9, 2017, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Dec. 11, 1951, in Honolulu, he was a controller for E.M. Rivera Construction Company, Waikoloa Outrigger Hotel and an accountant at the Keauhou Bay Sheraton Hotel and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 2nd ward.

Visitation will be held at 8 a.m. Jan. 5 at the Kaneohe Chapel at 45-150 Waikalua Road in Kaneohe, Oahu; funeral service at 11 a.m.; burial will follow at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery’s Inspiration Garden. A memorial service will also be held on Jan. 13 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kailua-Kona with visitation at 8:30 a.m. and service at 10 a.m. The family requests casual attire and flowers are welcome.

He is survived by wife, Laverne Recolan-Sylva of Kailua-Kona; son, Makana (Jaime) Sylva of California; daughters, Kaui (James) Brown of Kansas, and Kanoe (Mike) Okouchi of Huntington Beach, CA; stepdaughters, Alicia (Randy) Naito of Honolulu, and Janese Recolan of Kailua-Kona; 10 grandchildren; several aunts and uncles; a nephew and numerous cousins.

Joseph Hinton

Joseph “Joe” Allen Hinton, 71, of Kailua-Kona, died Aug. 18, 2017, at Nakamaru Hale in Holualoa. Born Aug. 20, 1945, in Joliet, Ill., he was the owner of Joe’s Yoga, a counselor for the state Department of Education, a cyclist and kayaker.

He is survived by sister, Jimmie Boykin; nieces, Ingrid (Pierre) Lane all of Naperville, Ill., Michelle Boykin of Chicago, Reanetta Wright of Joliet, Ill.; nephews, James (Darlene Scott Boykin) Boykin of Dallas, Texas, Tyrone Woods, and Nova Woods; grandnephew, Cameron Wright all of Joliet, Ill.

Salome Damasco

Salome Maria Damasco, 93, of Pahoa, died Oct. 18, 2017, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born Feb. 15, 1924, in Santa Iloco Sur, Philippines, she was a retired CNA in California.
