Kathleen Jaeger is Kailua Village’s featured artist of the month
Kailua Village Artists Gallery is featuring Kathleen Jaeger as the Featured Artist for the month of March.
Jaeger will introduce pen and ink drawings, as well as an expanded offering of hand-painted glassware and new acrylic and mosaic work during March. Her work with pen and ink has evolved into detailed images of local themes from the Big Island found on land, sea and air.
Kailua Village Artists Gallery will host meet and greets with Jaeger on March 5, 13 and 19. Kailua Village Artists Gallery is located at the Kona Marketplace and is open daily from 9:20 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

First Friday Art-After- Dark this weekend
Friday, Holualoa Village again welcomes residents and visitors to their monthly celebration of art, music and food, First Friday Art-After-Dark. This month’s event is from 5:30-8:30 p.m. March 2nd
Art and artists will be in over a dozen galleries and shops, as well as free live music and a great selection of local food vendors. This community event is for all ages.
Musical entertainment for the evening includes Dr. Tim and the Medicine Band, performing on the lanai of Ipu Arts Plus, Dave Lawrence and friends at Koa Realty, John Collins at Holualoa Gallery, and mainstays The Mauka High Notes performing on the lanai of Holualoa Ukulele Gallery.
At Holualoa Gallery, featured artist, William Wingert will be painting live. Kona Dogs Gourmet Street Food and Holoholoz fresh fish will provide the culinary entertainment.
Glyph Art Gallery will be welcoming two new artists to the gallery this month, Christina Skaggs and Margaret Barnaby.
Holualoa Ukulele Gallery is displaying new ukuleles by Paul Arrington, and the last available instruments by Leo Koschella.

Kahilu Theatre hosts Sumi-e demo by artist Ellen Crocker
Kahilu Exhibits, the art exhibition program at the Kahilu Theatre, will present a free event, an artist demo and gallery walkthrough, from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Artist Ellen Crocker will offer a free hands on demonstration of the art of Sumi-e (Japanese ink painting).
The public is encouraged to participate and to bring an apron, or clothes to get ink on. All materials and equipment will be provided and all ages are welcome, include children from the age of 5 (with an adult). Those who would like to attend this should RSVP Kahilu Theatre box office at 885-6868, with a name and the number in party who will attend.
Crocker is looking forward to the demo as a fantastic addition to her exhibition in the galleries.
“One of our goals at Kahilu Theatre is to deliver exciting arts experiences to young and old alike, that reflect the diverse richness of our community,” said Sally Lundburg, Exhibits Coordinator of Kahilu Theatre in a press release. “Ellen Crocker is one of those rare teachers who has both deep technical abilities and experience along with great people skills. This is wonderful opportunity for our community to get a hands on experience with an accomplished artist.”

Hawaii Forest &Trail hosting Beer &Gear Night
Hawaii Forest &Trail will be hosting Beer &Gear Night at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
The event is for Hawaii Forest &Trail to show off their retail area, talk with customers and have a special or sale that they run for that night. Beverages will be served along with samples of camping foods, as well as a showcase different products.
The Alt to perform at Kahilu Theatre
Irish band the Alt will be performing at Kahilu Theatre at 7 p.m. March 23.
The Alt consists of guitarist John Doyle, singer and guitar player Eamon O’Leary and fiddler Kevin Burke.

Switchback, an award-winning duo of Brian Fitzgerald and Martin McCormak, will be performing at Kahilu Theatre at 7 p.m. March 26.

Nervous Jenny to tour Big Island
Portland indie rock band Nervous Jenny will be touring the Big Island starting March 9 to promote their debut album Silverado.
The shows are March 9 at Korner Pocket in Kealakekua, March 10 at Hilo Town Tavern, March 16 at Big Island Brewhaus in Kamuela and March 17 at Gertrude’s Jazz Bar. All shows start at 8 p.m.

Waimea Ballroom Dance Club holds Monday lessons
The Waimea Ballroom Dance Club will start meeting at 7 p.m. on Mondays at the Kahilu Town Hall in Kamuela for dance lessons.
No partner is necessary and the dance type changes every six weeks. Lessons are $40 for all six weeks.

Winner of the silver medal at the 15th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, pianist Kenny Broberg will perform at the Kahilu Theatre at 7 p.m. March 29.

The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition is an American competition started in 1962 and is held once every four years. The competition takes place over the course of two weeks, where 30 competitors are chosen out of hundreds of applicants and participants perform four live rounds for judges, covering everything from solo performances to concertos. The 23-year-old Broberg is noted for his remarkable technique, keen musical instincts, and great sensitivity to dynamics.

Super hero workshop at the Aloha Theatre
Any kid who’s ever wanted to be a superhero can move one step closer through a three-day workshop at the Aloha Theatre.
Instructor Jaquelynn Collier will lead would-be superheroes ages 8 to 12 as they choose their superpower, design and build a costume, and write their superhero story.
Attendees should dress comfortably for movement and wear closed-toe shoes, and should bring a lunch.
Workshop dates are March 19-23 and the cost is $125.

Rep. Gabbard seeks student entries for 2018 Kaha Kii Art Competition
Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) announced that she is accepting submissions from Hawaii high school artists in the 2nd Congressional District for the 2018 Congressional Art Competition.
“The Congressional Art Competition is a great platform for our students to share their unique perspective and creativity with people across Hawaii and in our nation’s capital. I’m always so impressed by the incredible talent of Hawaii’s young artists, and inspired by the many fine arts educators who encourage our students to participate in activities like this Congressional Art Competition,” said Gabbard, who has hosted the Kaha Kii Art Competition for Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District since 2013.
The deadline to submit artwork to the competition is March 5. Semifinalists’ artwork will be hung at the Hawaii State Capitol from April 2-May 12. Congresswoman Gabbard will announce the winning pieces at an awards ceremony on May 12 at the Hawaii State Capitol. The first-place piece will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol, along with winning artwork from all other congressional districts around the country that participate in the nationwide competition.
