HILO — Mayor Harry Kim has completed his Cabinet rebuild, following a spate of resignations last fall.
Kim is asking the County Council to confirm Allan Simeon as the director of the Department of Public Works. Simeon, previously DPW deputy director, has been acting director since October, when former Director Frank DeMarco resigned.
The council will likely consider Simeon for the $132,577 annual position next week.
“He just got tired of me nagging him,” Kim said of Simeon agreeing to head the department.
Simeon, a licensed professional engineer, worked his way up within DPW since joining the county as a civil engineer III in 1997. Previously, he worked as a civil engineer for Okahara and Associates in Hilo.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a high school diploma from Ilocos Norte College of Arts and Trades, Philippines.
Simeon could not be reached for comment by press time Tuesday.
Kim said he’s been pleased with how Simeon has brought the large department and its six divisions together, with employees working as a team. DPW oversees everything from building permits to road construction to the county’s vehicle fleet.
Kim also replaced his finance director and director and deputy director of Parks and Recreation last year.
