Seismic array deployed to better understand magma transport during Kilauea’s eruption

Fissure 8 erupts in Leilani Estates in this USGS photo posted Saturday on Hawaiian Volcano Observatory's website.
This Hawaiian Volcano Observatory aerial photo (looking east) shows the fissure 8 lava channel Friday morning. The dark-colored crust and incandescent cracks on the channel result from the cooling of exposed lava at the surface and movement within the lava channel.

Kilauea Volcano’s 2018 lower East Rift Zone eruption and summit collapse provided a rare opportunity to study dynamic eruptive processes beneath and at the surface of the volcano.
