Randy Mantyla


Randy Arvi Mantyla, 65, died Sept. 2, 2018, on Oahu. He was owner of Randy’s Quality Meats, a commercial fisherman on the Bering Sea and gill-netted willapa, was a builder of bridges across the western states and was the manager/operator of the Big Island Roto-Rooter Sewer Service

A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Sept. 30 at the grassy park at the end of Honokohau Harbor.

He is survived by wife Joanna; son, Ian (Anna) Mantyla, daughter, Anne (Scott) Rubey; three grandchildren and two brothers.

Masamori Sunahara

Masamori “Masa” Sunahara, 93, of Papaikou, died Sept. 7, 2018, at the Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Ninole, he lived in Hakalau then Papaikou for many years, was a heavy equipment operator training supervisor with the former Hilo Coast Processing Co., member of Hilo Coast United Church of Christ, Papaikou Senior Softball Team and the Papaikou Kumiai.

A celebration of life will be announced and held at a later date.

He is survived by his son, Reed Sunahara of Morgantown, W. Va.; daughters, Joan (Warren) Chong of Kona and Marcia (Reid) Lee of Austin, Texas; brother-in-law, Richard Unoki of Hakalau; sisters-in-law, Blanche Unoki of Pepeekeo and Ellen Horiuchi of Oahu; eight grandchildren, three great granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Akao

Elizabeth Kapeka Akao, 94, of Kailua Kona, died Aug. 4, 2018 at Life Care Center of Kona. Born March 9, 1924, Elizabeth worked at Kona Palm Hotel in Kailua-Kona as a housekeeper in the late 1950s, and was a homemaker and active member of Jehovah’s Witness congregation.

Her celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 6, 2018, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.


She is survived by daughters Elizabeth (Francis) Waiau of Kailua Kona; Clara (Morris Jr.) Graciidis of Kailua-Kona; son Philip (Diane) Akao of Kailua Kona; Doreen (late-Frank Sr.) Akao of Kailua-Kona; step-daughter Annette (Buster) Causey of South Carolina; step-sons Carolina (late-Francis) Akao of Kohala; Marasaline (late-Eugene) Akao of Hilo; Hanai daughter Georgiann (Eric) Lauronal of Kailua-Kona; Hanai son Francis Akao of Kailua-Kona; numerous grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.
