KAILUA-KONA — Big Island Drug Court participants spent the last day of National Drug Court Month in May giving back to the community.
About 30 west side participants of the program worked to collect money and food for The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s lone food bank, Friday afternoon at KTA Super Stores in Kailua-Kona. In addition to manning a tent fronting the store, participants worked motorists for donations to support the nonprofit organization.
“It’s a wonderful agency that helps people in early recovery,” said Grayson Hashida, Big Island Drug Court coordinator. “It’s nice for them to actually give back to a program that helped them.”
Friday’s fundraising effort followed Big Island Drug Court graduating one participant in Hilo on Thursday. The program in West Hawaii graduated seven participants earlier this month.
