Man indicted in connection with 2013 sex assault

KAILUA-KONA — An Oahu man has been indicted on sex assault and kidnapping charges stemming from a December 2013 incident on the Big Island.

A Hilo grand jury on Dec. 18 charged Dutchie Lono Kaluna with four counts first-degree sexual assault and one count each third-degree sexual assault and kidnapping in connection with the incident involving a teenage girl.

The indictment states the alleged crimes occurred on or about Dec. 7, 2013. The counts allege various forms of penetration and contact while the kidnapping charge accuses Kaluna of “intentionally or knowingly” restraining the victim with intent to inflict bodily injury and/or subject her to a sexual offense.

Police said the incident occurred in Waikoloa.

A $275,000 bench warrant was issued on Monday for Kaluna’s arrest, which had yet to occur as of press time.

According to court records and the Department of Public Safety, Kaluna is incarcerated at Oahu Community Correctional Center in connection with cases in that circuit that include burglary, car theft and other crimes with bail set at $25,000 in one of the cases.

First-degree sexual assault is a Class A felony punishable by up to 20 years imprisonment. Third-degree sexual assault, a Class C felony, carries up to five years behind bars.
