ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida State will open the 2023 football season against LSU at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium.
The matchup, which is set to take place on Sunday, Sept. 3, is one of two future neutral-site matchups the Seminoles will have with the Tigers. The other will be played at Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on Sept. 4, 2022.
“I’m excited about this series,” FSU coach Mike Norvell said in a statement. “Florida State has a rich tradition in Louisiana, the home of many former Seminoles including Warrick Dunn and Travis Minor, and all three of our national championship teams had at least one player from Louisiana.
” … This series matches two of the iconic brands in college football, and I know our fans will have a great time in New Orleans and Orlando. I want to thank our administration for all their hard work on this and for continuing to pursue first-class experiences for our student-athletes.”
Added LSU coach Ed Orgeron, “Our team looks forward to playing Florida State to open the 2022 and 2023 seasons. To play a traditional power like Florida State is a challenge that excites our team. Playing in New Orleans and Orlando is a great opportunity for us to showcase to recruits the LSU program.”
This is the second time that an FSU team has opened a season in Central Florida.
Florida State took on Ole Miss at Camping World Stadium to kick off the 2016 season, with the ‘Noles coming away with a 45-34 come-from-behind win.
“We are so excited to bring yet another thrilling kickoff game to Orlando, and we look forward to hosting college football fans from around the globe for this unbelievable matchup,” said Florida Citrus Sports CEO Steve Hogan, whose organization coordinates events at Camping World Stadium.
The FSU-LSU game will be part of Orlando’s Camping World Kickoff series.
Florida State leads the all-time series with LSU 7-2, with the Seminoles winning four consecutive games in the series. The 2022 meeting will be the first since the two teams played in 1991.
This matchup is the FSU’s third nonconference game set for the 2022 season, with the Seminoles hosting Louisiana (Nov. 19) and Florida (Nov. 26). It’s the second FSU nonconference game of the 2023 season along with a road contest against rival Florida on Nov. 25.
This is the fourth neutral-site opener for the Seminoles since 2014, who previously opened a season in Arlington, Texas, (Oklahoma State, 2014); Orlando (Ole Miss, 2016) and Atlanta (Alabama, 2017). The team was supposed to play Boise State in Jacksonville last season, but FSU was forced to move the game to Doak Campbell Stadium due to weather concerns.
