Hawaii Prep, Kamehameha will face off in Division II boys soccer state tournament; Makua Lani falls

Hawaii Prep shut out Waipahu 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the HHSAA Division II boys soccer state tournament at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oahu.

Daniel Vidal Gayoso scored a hat trick for Ka Makani, and Benjamin Kubo also scored a goal in Thursday’s game.

HPA goalkeepers Zane Willman and Kawehi Cabuzel recorded the shutout.

“The boys had a hard time finding their feet in the first half, but in the second half all the boys got on the same wavelength and worked as a solid unit out there,” HPA head coach James Berry said. “Their work to help each other on and off the ball won us the game. A definite team effort today.”

Ka Makani will play fellow Hawaii Island team Kamehameha at 1 p.m. Friday in the semifinals.

The Warriors defeated Pac-Five 1-0 on Thursday to advance in the tournament.

Kapaa 3, Makua Lani 1

The Lions fell in the tournament to No. 1-seeded Kapaa, 3-1, on Thursday.

Ka‘alelekahaku Fernandez scored the goal for the Lions.

Makua Lani enters the consolation bracket to play Aiea at 3 p.m. Friday.

“They had good speed up top and finished their shots. Did well to press our mid. Defensively strong and organized,” Makua Lani head coach Teva Beatty said. “Our team worked hard and gave it everything. We had lots of opportunities and just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net. Not our day. Hats off to Kapaa.”
