Ka’u High coaching positions available
Ka’u High School is currently accepting applications for head coaching positions.
The positions are: girls varsity basketball head coach; boys varsity basketball head coach; and girls/boys varsity cross country head coach.
Each coach must be:
• Responsible for supervision of student athletes during “participation” in the sport. Participation includes practices, contests and travel to and from contests
• Responsible for knowledge and compliance with NFHS, BIIF and HHSAA rules of the sport
• Responsible for knowledge and compliance with DOE and Ka’u High School coaching policies.
• Responsible to plan, organize and supervise practices and contests.
• Responsible to plan and organize travel for your team.
• Responsible for financial records of your team. Keep accurate fund raising records of your team. Keep accurate records of travel payments.
• Responsible to assist in fund raising by the athletic department.
• Must pass the DOE background check.
HHSAA start date for girls and boys basketball is early Nov. 2020 (first day for tryouts). Non-mandatory “conditioning” may start immediately.
HHSAA start date for cross country is early August 2020 (first day for tryouts). Non-mandatory “conditioning” may start immediately.
The deadline for applications is April 1. Applications can be picked up from the Ka’u High School office during business hours, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Scholarships available from canoe club
Keauhou Canoe Club has announced two separate $1,500 scholarships available to graduating high school seniors in West Hawaii.
Students must be pursuing continuing education at the trade school, community college, university or college level. The James F. Rogers Academic Scholarship is awarded to an outrigger canoe paddler (at the club or high school sport level in the past three years) who has shown excellence in academics, extracurricular activities, and community service. The Mike Haines Merit Achievement Scholarship is awarded to a paddler (at the club or high school sport level in the past three years) who has demonstrated wide-ranging extra-curricular activities at school, church, work, outstanding community service, as well as high academic potential.
The club is recognizing leadership skills, initiative, responsibility, integrity, a diligent work ethic, and dedication to successful activities. Applications include your transcript and SAT and ACT scores, a personal statement and three letters of recommendation from a school staff member, community member, and your paddling coach.
