HONOLULU — The state of Hawaii has recorded its first death from COVID-19.
State officials late Monday night said the adult suffered from multiple underlying health conditions, and that the available history of the person suggests they had a potential indirect travel-related exposure.
The person was tested at a clinical commercial laboratory, but the results were indeterminate.
Authorities said in a release that the person died Friday, and follow-up testing at a state lab on Monday confirmed the person died from COVID-19.
Other than they lived on Oahu, officials didn’t release many details about the person who died, including age or gender.
Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell offered condolences in late Monday tweet..
“It breaks my heart to hear of the first death on Oahu due to COVID-19. We must continue to act with immediacy to keep this virus at bay and flatten the curve. We are all in this together. Please take care of yourselves and your families. We will get through this,” Caldwell tweeted.
The state health department said as of Monday, Hawaii had 77 positive cases with a majority of those on Oahu.
