The Rotary Club of Kona Mauka is now stocking its “Little Libraries” with more than books amid these challenging times.
The service organization in an effort to support literacy has been installing Little Libraries throughout Kona, where people can borrow and donate books. This week, the club began adding food at some of those libraries to help those in need during the coronavirus pandemic.
“I just thought it would just be a great thing to just throw some stuff in there for people that are less fortunate,” said Sam Johnson, who heads club services. “It’s been pretty darn successful so far.”
Johnson began adding food to the libraries on Wednesday after finding pasta, pasta sauce and canned goods on sale at a local grocery store.
“I commute from Ocean View everyday, so it’s no big deal for me to just stop by and set up these different libraries,” he said.
The hope is that those in need can benefit while those who may have a little extra can help the club stock the libraries.
“Once we get the word out, I hope just the general public will be like, ‘wow, I’m going to go drop off some food in there,” said Johnson.
