No injuries were reported after a sailboat ran aground Sunday afternoon in Kailua Bay.
The 38-foot Macavity apparently broke its mooring and drifted toward shore, becoming grounded on the reef fronting the Kona Inn Restaurant in Kailua-Kona, said Hawaii Fire Department West Hawaii Battalion Chief Michael Grace. The incident was reported at 12:48 p.m.
No one was aboard the vessel at the time, he said. No injuries were reported.
As of the time fire department crews left the scene, turning it over to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, no fuel was leaking, he said. The U.S. Coast Guard was also notified and is monitoring the vessel.
Attempts to reach the Coast Guard and DLNR for additional information on the vessel were unsuccessful as of press-time Sunday.
The Hawaii Fire Department said the owner was working with a salvage company to remove the vessel. The sailboat had been moored in the bay since Friday.
The owner, who was at the scene Sunday evening, declined comment.
