We are almost there
I would like to respond to Bob Johnson’s Dec. 11 My Turn, “The fight’s just getting started.” The fighting is just over, according to the U.S. Supreme Court order dated Dec. 11. Trump is done!
First, I am a white male, 70 years old, lived in Kona for 32 years and in Hawaii since 1965. I have been and still am a Republican for most of my adult life. I have a major problem with how Johnson and the other 74 million Americans have supported a president that has spent the last four years feathering his own and family’s nest and with total disregard for the rest of the nation, which I am sure he considers “suckers.” I am not quite sure what Mr. Johnson sees in this president, but I am quite sure it is as delusional as the president sees himself. Trump as of Jan. 20, 2021, will no longer be able to destroy the fabric of the United States of America. He will finally be a distraction that will fade over time. The Republican Party, however, is broken beyond repair. Trump has bullied the entire Republican Party into believing that their only salvation is to support only what he “dreams” right or he will smite them down with “fire and fury like they have never seen before.” We all know how that went. Trump’s fingerprints will forever be on the tombstones of all the Americans who have died because of his and all the Republican enablers that let this deadly virus envelope the United States.
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) and his gang of traitors to the Constitution, which they swore to uphold but instead chose to pledge their souls to “King Trump.” They too will come to a just reckoning and all their misdeeds will be laid bare for all of us to see. Until this happens, I will continue to vote with all the real Republicans and the 83 million Americans who will fight to see that there never be another presidency like Trump’s. We will someday soon shine again as a nation, a light to the world. We are almost there.

Shop local
This year, more than ever, it’s clear that we need to all do our best to “shop locally” this holiday season. I was happily surprised at the cheery atmosphere and live holiday music presented at the Keauhou Shopping Center on a recent Saturday. Also happy to see one of our local treasures, Kona Stories Bookstore is still going strong (some 14 years later). It shows just how much our community supports locally owned businesses.
Kona Stories has survived in a mega-bookstore downsizing movement, and has managed to outlive Borders (remember them?). They have also stepped up and become an important community partner during our school closures. Since the pandemic began Kona Stories has organized a funding drive and donated thousands of dollars in books and educational materials to local students and teachers. Their wonderful generosity has helped teachers, like me, reach out to students in need, and supply them with much-appreciated learning materials. (And their work continues with a “STEM materials” donation drive now on-going.) Again, supporting our local businesses helps strengthen our economy — and our community.
