A 60-year-old motorcyclist died Saturday following a single-vehicle crash in Ka‘u 0.3 miles west of the 68.5 mile marker on Highway 11.
A 60-year-old motorcyclist died Saturday following a single-vehicle crash in Ka‘u 0.3 miles west of the 68.5 mile marker on Highway 11.
The Hawaii Police Department identified the man on Sunday as Ray Allen Riveira Sr., of Kea‘au.
Responding to a 5:13 p.m. call, police said officers determined that an unknown year blue Harley-Davidson motorcycle heading east drove off the right shoulder of the roadway and down a slight embankment, striking several rocks. Riveira was transported to the Kona Community Hospital where he was later pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m.
Police said the victim was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation and is asking for anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact Officer Severo Ines at (808) 326-4646, ext. 229, or email at mailto:severo.ines@hawaiicounty.gov. This is the eighth traffic fatality this year compared to six at this time last year.
