Big Island police arrested 21 motorists for suspected drunken driving April 19 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and three were younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested 10 drivers while South Hilo officers arrested four, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. South Kohala and Puna officers arrested three motorists in each district and Ka‘u officers nabbed one.
So far this year, there have been 405 DUI arrests compared with 388 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 249 major accidents so far this year compared with 269 during the same period last year.
As of Tuesday morning, eight fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, eight people had also died.
