Two dozen nabbed for DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested two dozen motorists for suspected drunken driving Nov. 8 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

Kona officers arrested 13 drivers while Puna officers arrested four, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, officers in South Kohala and South Hilo arrested three drivers in each district and North Kohala officers one.

So far this year, there have been 948 DUI arrests compared with 853 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 697 major accidents so far this year compared with 678 during the same period last year.

As of Sunday, 23 fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By that time in 2020, 14 people had died.
