PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas — Tyler Polley scored a career-high 24 points and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:58 left in the second overtime to help No. 22 UConn beat No. 19 Auburn 115-109 in Wednesday’s first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis.
Adama Sanogo finished with a career-best 30 points for the Huskies (5-0), who blew a 15-point lead in regulation and squandered a lead late in the first overtime in a wild game. But Sanogo and Polley didn’t let the Huskies stumble in the second overtime, scoring 14 points as UConn finally pushed ahead for good.
K.D. Johnson and top freshman Jabari Smith had their own huge performances for the Tigers (3-1). Johnson scored 23 of his career-high 27 points after halftime, including driving baskets in the final seconds of regulation and the first overtime to extend the game.
Smith, meanwhile, had 19 of his 22 after halftime, including the 3-pointer from in front of the Auburn bench with 2:39 left to erase the last of a 65-50 deficit near the 11-minute mark.
NO. 6 BAYLOR 75, ARIZONA STATE 63
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas — L.J. Cryer had 15 points and Baylor beat Arizona State to wrap up first-round play at the Battle 4 Atlantis.
Matthew Mayer added 14 points for the national champion Bears (5-0), who led 45-31 by the break, then pushed that margin to 22 midway through the second half.
D.J. Horne had 20 points to lead the Sun Devils (2-3), including a jumper and a pair of 3-pointers in the opening 2 1/2 minutes.
While knocking down shots against Baylor’s defense was a challenge, Arizona State didn’t help itself with 15 turnovers that led to 16 points for the Bears.
NO. 8 TEXAS 68, CALIFORNIA BAPTIST 44
AUSTIN, Texas — Timmy Allen and Andrew Jones scored 15 points apiece and Texas handed California Baptist its first loss of the season.
Allen had eight rebounds and Jones handed out five assists. Courtney Ramey added 12 points for Texas (4-1).
Ty Rowell led California Baptist (5-1) with nine points.
NO. 9 MEMPHIS 69, VIRGINIA TECH 61
NEW YORK — DeAndre Williams had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Memphis outlasted Virginia Tech in the NIT Season Tip-Off.
Emoni Bates added nine points, all in the second half, making four free throws in the final minute for Memphis (5-0).
Nahiem Alleyne scored 21 points and Keve Aluma added 14 for Virginia Tech (5-1).
Alleyne made a 3-pointer with 4:36 left to give Virginia Tech a 56-55 edge, but Memphis responded with a 6-0 run and put the game away at the free-throw line.
NO. 12 HOUSTON 78, OREGON 49
LAS VEGAS — Fabian White Jr. scored 15 points, Marcus Sasser added 14 and Houston overpowered Oregon in the Maui Invitational third-place game.
The Cougars (5-1) smothered the Ducks with defensive pressure and pushed them around inside to lead by 34 early in the second half.
Eric Williams Jr. had 13 points to lead the Ducks (3-3), whose only win in the Maui Invitational was against Division II Chaminade.
NO. 18 BYU 81, TEXAS SOUTHERN 64
PROVO, Utah — Te’Jon Lucas had 18 points and seven assists to lead BYU past Texas Southern.
Fousseyni Traore scored 13 points while Alex Barcello scored 12 and Gavin Baxter added 11 for the Cougars (5-0). Gideon George had 10 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.
BYU improved to 12-0 all-time vs. Southwestern Athletic Conference teams.
P.J. Henry led the Tigers (0-6) with 21 points.
NO. 20 MICHIGAN 65, TARLETON STATE 54
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Eli Brooks scored 15 points and Michigan overcame a sloppy performance to beat Tarleton State.
Moussa Diabate and Caleb Houstan scored 14 points apiece for Michigan (4-2), which committed 20 turnovers. Hunter Dickinson added nine points and 10 rebounds.
Montre Gipson led Tarleton State (1-5) with 17 points and Tahj Small added 12.
NO. 21 SETON HALL 62, CALIFORNIA 59
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Jared Rhoden scored 21 points as Seton Hall beat California in the third-place game at the Fort Myers Tip-Off.
Kadary Richmond had 12 points, while Alexis Yetna and Tyrese Samuel each scored 10 for Seton Hall (4-1).
Andre Kelly had 23 points and 11 rebounds, and Grant Anticevich scored 15 points for California (2-4).
NO. 23 FLORIDA 71, OHIO STATE 68
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Tyree Appleby hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer and Florida beat Ohio State in the Fort Myers Tip-Off championship game.
The entire Gators bench stormed on the court for a wild celebration after Appleby’s shot went in. Players were dancing at midcourt awaiting the start of the trophy celebration.
Florida (5-0) got 19 points from Phlandrous Fleming Jr. Colin Castleton had 11 points and 13 rebounds.
E.J. Liddell scored 23 points for Ohio State (4-2).
IOWA STATE 82, NO. 25 XAVIER 70
NEW YORK — Izaiah Brockington scored 23 of his 30 points in the second half, and Iowa State beat Xavier in the NIT Season Tip-Off.
Tyrese Hunter added 19 points for Iowa State (5-0), Gabe Kalscheur scored 12 points and George Conditt had 10.
Jack Nunge scored 24 points off the bench for Xavier (4-1). Colby Jones had 11 points and Dwon Odom scored 10.
