Police arrest two after violent confrontation in Orchidland

Police arrested two people Friday after one of them allegedly rammed two taxpayer-subsidized police vehicles in Puna.

Police say officers were conducting traffic enforcement on Orchidland Drive at about 10:20 a.m. when they spotted an unoccupied Honda sedan parked at Wiki Wiki Mart.

The Honda was spray-painted black, had a broken windshield, no front license plate, and an expired safety check and weight tax, leading officers to suspect it was stolen.

One officer parked in front of the Honda while a second parked at the rear of the vehicle next to a gas pump, police said.

Kade Kapika-Overturf, 23, allegedly ran out of the convenience store and jumped into the sedan and attempted to flee, moving the vehicle forward and backwards while revving the engine.

When officers commanded Kapika-Overturf to stop the vehicle, he stopped for a brief moment and then accelerated, striking the police vehicle in front of him, police said.

In an effort to de-escalate the situation and not use lethal force, the officer at the front of the vehicle used his baton to break the front passenger window, according to police. A second officer opened the rear driver-side door in an attempt to stop the suspect.

Kapika-Overturf then allegedly reversed, hitting the second officer with the open rear driver-side door, throwing the officer backwards and striking the front end the other police vehicle before coming to a final stop.

The officer who was reportedly hit by the Honda entered the car and discovered a woman, 26-year-old Shayla Kamahele, hiding in the back passenger seat.

The officer who had broken the car window with the baton attempted to discharge his Taser at Kapika-Overturf, police said, but Kamahele ripped the Taser’s wires, and the officer deployed the Taser again before arresting both Kapika-Overturf and Kamahele.

Police reportedly recovered 8.5 grams of methamphetamine and discovered the vehicle identification numbers had been removed from the Honda, so it’s not yet known if the vehicle was stolen.

Kapika-Overturf was charged on a probation revocation warrant, as well as two counts of second-degree criminal property damage.

Kamahele was charged on a contempt of court warrant and arrested on suspicion of second-degree hindering prosecution.

Drug charges are also pending, police said.

The investigation continues, and both Kapika-Overturf and Kamahele remained in police custody as of Friday.
