Police investigating possible drowning of visitor

Police are investigating the possible drowning of a 31-year-old Washington state man in waters off South Kona.

Shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to Honaunau Bay, home of the popular Two-Step snorkeling site, after a visitor reported finding the body of an unresponsive man floating approximately 5 yards offshore. The visitor pulled the man’s body from the water and instructed a bystander to call 911 while he administered CPR until Hawaii Fire Department personnel arrived on scene.

The victim man was taken to Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:56 p.m.

Police are withholding the man’s identity pending notification of family
