One dead following crash in Pepeekeo

One man is dead and second person hospitalized following a two-car crash Saturday evening on Highway 19 in Pepeekeo.

Responding to the 3:48 p.m. report, Hawaii Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene of the crash near Wai‘a‘ama Stream Bridge, in the vicinity of mile marker 10 on Highway 19, to find a head-on collision between two pickup trucks, according to a press release.

One of the trucks was resting on the passenger side with a single diver occupant inside. The other vehicle has sustained severe front-end damage, and also contained a single driver occupant inside.

Fire rescue personnel transported one man to Hilo Medical Center. The second person, whose gender was not identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic was detoured around the crash site through the Onomea Scenic Route, also known as Old Mamalahoa Highway, while police investigated the fatal crash. The highway reopened shortly before 7 p.m.
