Police: Elderly man killed with bow-and-arrow
Police think Charles Hacker — an 86-year-old Hawaiian Shores man who died Wednesday after being found unconscious and bleeding profusely from his neck as he sat in a walker-seat on his driveway — was killed with a bow-and-arrow.
Police on Friday charged 33-year-old Cameron Stewart, a neighbor of Hacker’s, with second-degree murder.
Lt. Rio Amon-Wilkins said Friday afternoon that “information we received while investigating at the scene” of the Kawakawa Street homicide led them to Stewart.
Asked if there had been any previous altercations between Stewart and Hacker, Amon-Wilkins replied, “Not that we’re aware of.
Police say Stewart and his family moved to the island from Arizona in the middle of June.
Detectives served a search warrant on Stewart’s residence and recovered a recurve bow, various arrows and other archery-related items.
Stewart’s Facebook page lists him as an “instructor and assistant at Wranglers Roost, New River, Arizona,” and said he’s from Aberdeen, Ohio.
It also said Stewart is from Aberdeen, Idaho.
A call to Wrangler’s Roost, a Western-themed resort, to ask about Stewart resulted in a “no comment” and hang-up from the individual who answered the phone.
A post on Wrangler’s Roost’s Facebook page dated Sept. 11, 2017, shows several people, both adults and children, practicing archery with the notation, “Our very own Coach Cam taught this group of 7 on the 2nd!”
Stewart’s page has multiple photos of arrows in archery targets. One photo shows a can of Coors Light beer can fronting an archery target with four arrows in a tight formation above the brand logo on the can.
“All sorts of things are brought to my archery range by the wind. I figured I’d show it how welcome it was,” Stewart posted.
Stewart’s bail has been set at $1 million. He remains in police custody pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Tuesday in Hilo District Court.
