Oregon man victim of apparent drowning

Hawaii Island police are investigating a possible drowning Sunday morning at Kaunaoa Bay, near the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in South Kohala.

Shortly before 11 a.m. police responded to the bay after an unresponsive man was pulled from the water by lifeguards who began administering CPR, police said.

The man, later identified as 61-year-old John Mackenzie of Terrebonne, Oregon, was transported to the Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 11:54 a.m.

A coroner’s inquest has been initiated and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
