A long-time Oahu state Senator on Saturday secured the Democratic Party nod for U.S. House in Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District.
Jill Tokuda will face Republican nominee Joe Akana and Libertarian nominee Michelle Tippens in the upcoming Nov. 8 general election to fill a seat vacated by outgoing U.S. Rep. Kai Kahele, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for the Democratic nod for Hawaii governor.
As of the second report issued by the state Office of Elections at 10:26 p.m. Saturday, Tokuda garnered 54,203 votes, or 49.8% of Democratic Party votes cast, in the district, which includes rural Oahu and the neighbor islands. She was followed by Pat Branco, who received 22,796 votes; Kyle Yoshida with 5,451; Brendan Schultz with 5,083; Nicole Gi with 3,096; and Pahoa resident Steven Sparks with 1,862.
In earning the Republican Party nod, Akana topped Webster with 21,527 votes to 4,454. Tippens received 279 Libertarian Party votes.
