Kusch sworn in as House District 1 representative
Matthias Kusch officially began his duties Thursday as the state representative for House District 1, which encompasses Hamakua, a portion of Hilo and Kaumana.
“The House appreciates Kusch’s readiness to step up and represent Hawaii Island,” said Speaker Scott K. Saiki in a press release. “His years of dedication as a community advocate reflect his deep commitment to his island home.”
Gov. Josh Green appointed Kusch on Aug. 30 to fill the House District 1 vacancy created by the passing of Rep. Mark Nakashima.
“I am honored to be selected by Governor Green and my fellow Democrats of House District 1,” said Kusch. “I will strive to serve the district and Hawaii Island with the same integrity and diligence that Representative Mark M. Nakashima exemplified during his tenure.”
Kusch brings a wealth of experience to the Legislature as a retired Hawaii Fire Department battalion chief, with over two decades of farming expertise, and a strong record of advocating for affordable housing.
He also serves as President of Hilo Bayfront Trails, is a member of the Windward Planning Commission, and actively engages in various other business and volunteer initiatives.
