The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) winter sports season continued Tuesday across the isle.
Basketball:
Kona 72, Waiakea 46
Konawaena boys basketball earned its third conference win of the season after routing Waiakea 72-46 on Tuesday in Kealakekua.
Junior guard Dylan Nonaka, who is averaging 19 points per game in the BIIF thus far, scored a team-high 19 points for the Wildcats. Teammates Joven Young and Kainoa Lorenzo combined for 26 points.
On the Warriors side, Josiah Amuimuia, the team’s leading scorer, added a game-high 24 points.
Kona (4-5 overall, 3-1 BIIF) will next take the court against Ka‘u on Friday night inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium. Junior varsity will square off first around 5 p.m. Waiakea (4-2 overall, 3-1 BIIF) will take some time off before next taking the floor against Christian Liberty Academy on Dec. 30 in Kea‘au.
Hilo 66, Ka‘u 47
Hilo boys basketball handled business during a Tuesday roadtrip down to Pahala, routing Ka‘u 66-47.
The paper was unable to obtain the list of top scorers of this game by deadline.
The Vikings (3-2 overall, 2-1 BIIF), who average nearly 66 points per game in the BIIF and nearly 59 overall, will next travel to the Kona side to take on Konawaena on Jan. 8 inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium.
The Trojans (2-4 overall, 1-2 BIIF) next face Konawaena on Friday evening in south Kona. Ka‘u also drove north to Kea‘au on Wednesday night to take on the Warriors at Kamehameha Schools Hawai‘i. See Friday’s paper to read the results.
SJS 56, CLA 33
St. Joseph’s boys basketball earned its first win of the season after routing Christian Liberty Academy on Tuesday night in Kea‘au. The Cardinals won 56-33.
SJS swingman Koen De La Cruz, who averages a team-high 16 points per game this season, scored 16 to lead the group. Teammates Amari Wiedemeir and Andrei Acierto combined for 21 points.
The Canefire’s Jeziah Mahaulu, who is the BIIF’s leading scorer and leads all Division II state teams in points scored at 27.7 points per game, dropped a game-high 22 points. Teammate Jermaine Cline had six.
The Cardinals improved to 1-2 on the season, and will next take the floor against the Seasiders on Dec. 21 at Laupahoehoe. CLA (1-3) will next take on Konawaena on Wednesday in Kealakekua.
Soccer: Hilo 4, Kona 0
Hilo girls soccer blanked Konawaena 4-0 on Tuesday at Wong Stadium.
Aneala Sibayan, the Lady Vikings’ leader in goals, notched a hat trick by scoring the team’s first three goals — a 15-yard shot assisted by Lilinoe Tonelli at the 13-minute mark, another 15-yard kick assisted by Akahai Kepoo-DeConte at the 41-minute mark and an 18-yarder assisted by Jade Ivey at the 43-minute mark.
Tonelli also scored a goal of her own — a 15-yard shot assisted by Lindsey Hiraki at the 47-minute mark.
Now at 2-1-1 in the early season, Hilo will next take the pitch against Kealakehe at 4 p.m. Saturday at home.
The Lady Wildcats (1-2) will next travel across the island to take on BIIF powerhouse KS-Hawai‘i at 7 p.m. Friday in Kea‘au.
Additionally, prior to the girls bout, Hilo and Kona’s boys teams matched up, with the Vikings winning 9-3.
The Vikings will next host Makua Lani Christian Academy at 2 p.m. Saturday in Hilo. The Wildcats will play the Warriors at 5 p.m. Friday at KS-Hawai‘i’s campus.
