HILO — Waiakea girls basketball reached .500 on the season after a convincing 50-33 victory over the Lady Cougars on Monday at Kea‘au High School.
The Lady Warriors led by 19-16 at halftime, but the floodgates opened in the second half — as Waiakea out-scored the hosts 31-17 over the final 16 minutes to seal victory.
Bryia Carenio finished with a game-high 20 points, followed by teammates Kaya Texeira and Sadie Calma, who combined for 25. The Lady Cougars had no double-figure scorers, but Keahialoa Kelly, Tiani Kaupu, Blessyng Rosario and Lenzy Adlawan combined for 28 of the team’s 33.
Now at 4-4 overall and 3-3 in BIIF play, the Lady Warriors will look to keep improving in their next matchup against Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i on Wednesday in Kea‘au. Kea‘au (2-6) returns to the floor at 6 p.m. Friday against Honoka‘a at home.
Honoka‘a 65, Kealakehe 48
Since Honoka‘a boys basketball opened its BIIF schedule late last month, they’ve been nothing short of dominant.
That stretch continued Monday night against Kealakehe in Kona town, as the Dragons won their fifth straight victory after a 65-48 rout. Honoka‘a got off to a 38-19 lead by halftime, and it was all smooth sailing from there.
Kukua Tagabi, who averages 23.4 points per game on the season and 28 overall, dropped a game-high 22 points. Teammate Raven Labrador added 17, followed by David Aiona with 16.
The ‘Riders suffered their first loss in the BIIF, moving to 5-3 on the season. They were led by top scorer DeMarion Olloway, who chipped in 17 points. Running mate Michael Miller scored 11.
Now at 5-4 overall and 5-0 in island play, the Dragons will aim to keep their win streak alive in their next matchup against Laupahoehoe on Monday night on the Hamakua Coast. Kealakehe will seek redemption Saturday in a matchup with Kohala in King Kamehameha Park Gymnasium.

KSH boys and girls soccer had a successful business trip to Honoka‘a town on Monday afternoon, routing both Dragons teams.
The boys played first, with the Warriors winning 7-1. William Henderson led with two goals, followed by Kaiao Kuamo‘o, Ryder Okumara, Landon Fukui and Iopa Quintana with one apiece. The paper was unable to locate Honoka‘a lone goal scorer.
In the girls match, KSH won 8-0. Madisyn Meyers scored an impressive four goals to lead her squad, followed by teammate Lily Kay-Wong with two. Kahalia Huddleston and Alohi Kalaola-Maruquin each had one.
KSH girls (4-1-1) will return to the pitch again Friday at home to face the Dragons (0-4-1) once again. The Warriors’ boys team (7-0-0) next plays against Kealakehe on Jan. 11 at Waverider Stadium. The Honoka‘a boys team (0-4-0) returns to action against Makua Lani Christian Academy on Friday at home.
