The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) winter sports season continued across the isle Wednesday with basketball and soccer matchups. See the paper over the next few weeks for updated island playoff coverage.
Soccer:
HPA 10, Ka‘u 0
HPA girls soccer won its second straight match on Wednesday in Waimea, routing the visiting Ka‘u Lady Trojans 10-0.
Ka Makani’s Nohea Lansdale led the way with a hat trick, followed by Madie Buczyna with two of her own. Tae Detwiler, Lidia Agudo Morcillo, Jade Fitz-Gerald and Kekai Lansdale additionally scored a goal each.
HPA improved to 6-4 in the late season. Its next match is to be determined. Ka Makani is widely expected to be a threat in the upcoming BIIF playoffs.
The Lady Trojans fell to 0-7. Ka‘u additionally faced Hilo on Thursday afternoon in Pahala. See Saturday’s paper for the results.
Basketball:
Kona 73, Kea‘au 9
Konawaena girls basketball won its 10th conference game and third consecutive after a 73-9 beatdown of Kea‘au inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium. It was the first and only matchup between the two schools this season.
The Lady Wildcats had a well-balanced scoring approach, with Caysea Kaupu leading the way with a game-high 11 points. Kiilei Leleiwi and Haikela Hiraishi scored nine apiece.
On the Lady Cougars’ side, Miykela Shirshac and Raychelle Ducusin scored four points each.
Since beginning its BIIF slate, 17-3 overall Kona has averaged over 75 points per game on the island while allowing under 12. They additionally played fellow juggernaut Kohala late Thursday night at home. Results will be shared in Saturday’s paper.
3-8 Kea‘au will return to the floor on Thursday against the Lady Waveriders at Kealakehe High School.

KSH 63, Kealakehe 11
Kamehameha Schools-Hawaii‘i girls basketball soared to 9-2 in the BIIF after a 63-11 beatdown of Kealakehe in Kea‘au.
Lady Warriors senior star Kacie Feebo-Santiago led the game with 23 points, followed by freshman teammate Shailan Benevides with 19. Sophomore Xiona Yagin had seven points.
11-2 overall KSH averages 45 points per game in the BIIF and allows 30.5. The Lady Warriors will return to the floor against Pahoa on Thursday night at KSH’s campus, concluding their four-game home slate.
Waiakea 46, Hilo 31
Waiakea girls basketball rebounded after a recent loss in a big way, beating local rival Hilo 46-31 in the Lady Warriors’ home gymnasium.
Waiakea out-scored the Lady Vikings in three of the four quarters to seal the 15-point win.
Kaya Texeira, who averages nearly 11 points per game for the Lady Warriors, sealed a game-high 17 points. Teammates Lexi Santiago and Bryia Carenio scored 10 apiece. Sadie Calma also added six. The winners average 41.3 points per game in BIIF play.
Tianna Cabbab was the only Hilo player that reached double digits in scoring, adding 10 points. Her teammates, Stephanie Hirowatari and Carly Akaka, combined for 10.
Now at 5-6 overall and 4-5 in the conference, Waiakea will next face HPA on Monday at home. The Lady Vikings (4-11 overall, 3-6 BIIF) played Christian Liberty Academy late Thursday night at home. Results will be shared in Saturday’s paper.
