HILO — Hilo boys basketball rebounded after dropping the past four straight games with a 68-16 rout of Christian Liberty Academy on Thursday night in the Vikings’ gymnasium.
Hilo (4-8 overall, 3-4 BIIF) jolted out to a 26-5 after the first quarter, setting the tone for the rest of the night.
Kingston Frazier led the Vikings with 16 points, followed by teammate Gilbert Hauanio IV with 14. Kalewa Lerma also added 11, while Shayston Iyo scored seven.
The 1-6 Canefire had no scorers in double digits, but Jermaine Cline led the team with nine points. Jeziah Mahaulu scored five.
Averaging over 52 points per game in league play, Hilo will next take the floor against Kea‘au on Monday night at home. CLA will also next play Monday against Parker School in Kea‘au.
Hilo girls basketball also rebounded with a 54-17 rout of Christian Liberty Academy at home.
The Lady Vikings out-scored the Canefire in each quarter, holding the guests to under 10 points in each interval.
Anuhea Ferreira, the Lady Vikings’ top scorer, produced a game-high 20 points. Teammates Carly Akaka and Stephanie Hirowatari added 14 and 11 points, respectively. Janessa Thorton additionally had nine.
CLA had no double-digit scorers, but was led by Shiloh Glenn with eight. Mikaili Banetto-Payomo scored four.
Hilo (5-11 overall, 4-6 BIIF) next plays against Parker on Monday in Waimea. The Canefire (2-9) plays Ka‘u on Monday night in Kea‘au.
HPA 64, Kohala 52
Hawaii Preparatory Academy boys basketball upset the defending state champion Kohala Cowboys on Thursday night in Waimea, winning 64-52.
Kohala jumped out to an 18-13 lead after a quarter, but Ka Makani’s defense locked in during the next interval, holding the Cowboys to nine points over the final eight minutes of the first half. To close the game, HPA out-scored the guests 14-6 in the fourth to clinch the victory.
Ka Makani sophomore forward Vander Eberhard, who averages 20.2 points per game for the red and white, scored a game-high 18 points. Teammate Kingdon Simmons added 14, while Cam Root and Micah Yamasaki scored 11 apiece.
Kohala senior point guard Isaac Salavador-Libron led his group with 15 points. Senior forward Jayden Hook had 14, while Dillon Oandasan added 12.
Now at 5-1 in the BIIF and 11-5 overall, HPA will look to keep building on this win with its matchup against Pahoa at 5:30 p.m. inside Castle Gymnasium.
Kohala suffered its first conference loss since Dec. 2022. The Cowboys will look to rebound against Honoka‘a tonight inside King Kamehameha Park Gymnasium. Junior varsity will tip off first at 5 p.m.

Konawaena girls basketball stayed unbeaten in BIIF play with a 55-24 rout of Kohala on Thursday night in Kealakekua.
Lady Wildcats point guard Mikela Salazar-Harrell led the team with 11 points, followed by Haikela Hiraishi with 10. Caysea Kaupu scored eight.
The Cowgirls had no double-digit scorers, but Kalia Marquez led the way with six points, followed by Chawai Dunhour and Halia Perez-Bobek with five apiece.
Moving to 11-0 in the BIIF and 18-3 overall, Kona will next drive to the Hilo side to take on Waiakea on Wednesday inside the Lady Warriors’ gymnasium. Thus far, the Lady Wildcats average 73.4 points per game in island play while allowing 13.
Kohala (13-3 overall, 8-2 BIIF) will try to redeem themselves against Parker at 7 p.m. tonight in Waimea.

Kealakehe boys basketball cruised to victory over Parker on Thursday inside the Waveriders’ gymnasium, winning 78-18.
The winners opened the night with a 31-8 first quarter, which set the table for the rest of the evening.
DeMani Olloway led all scorers with 13 points, followed by fellow Waverider Kamalu Pabre with 12. DeMarion Olloway and Noah Quebral combined for 17.
Moving to 9-4 overall and 6-2 in league play, Kealakehe also took the floor against Konawaena on Friday night on its home floor. See next week’s paper to read the results. The Waveriders average over 70 points per game in the BIIF.
The Bulls moved to 1-10 overall and 1-8 in league play. They’ll host Laupahoehoe at 5:30 p.m. tonight in Waimea.
