The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) basketball and soccer seasons continued over the weekend on the isle. See the paper this week for coverage on island playoffs for girls soccer.
Basketball: Honoka‘a 49, Kohala 45
After falling to Hawaii Preparatory Academy earlier in the week, Honoka‘a boys basketball rebounded in a big way, handing Kohala its second straight loss Saturday — winning 49-45.
The Cowboys led by 10 at halftime, but the Dragons locked in defensively — holding the defending DII state champions to just five points over the last eight minutes. Honoka‘a allows just under 54 points per game in conference play this season.
Dragons star Kukia Tagabi, who averages over 22 points per game, scored a team-high 18 points. Teammates David Aiona and Raven Labrador scored 10 each, respectively.
Kohala, falling to 8-7 overall and 6-2 in the BIIF, was led by point guard Isaac Salvador-Libron, who scored 18. No other Cowboy reached double figures in scoring, but Jayden Hook, Royden Tabiolo and Dillon Oandasan combined for 25 points. Kohala averages nearly 60 points per game in the BIIF while allowing 45.4.
Now back in the win column, Honoka‘a (8-6 overall, 8-2 BIIF) will look to keep it going against Christian Liberty Academy at 6 p.m. Friday in Kea‘au.
HPA 63, Pahoa 44
HPA boys basketball continued its hot streak, winning its sixth in a row after a 63-44 rout of Pahoa on Saturday inside Castle Gymnasium. Ka Makani improved to 12-5 overall and 6-1 in the BIIF, while the Daggers fell to 4-5.
HPA had a well-balanced offense in the win, logging four double-figure scorers — Kingdon Simmons (18), Vander Eberhard (13), Micah Yamasaki (11) and Max Aiona IV (11). In Ka Makani’s six-game win streak, it has scored 60 or more in five of the wins — averaging almost 60 points per game in the league.
Pahoa’s Kyran Canete, one of the top scorers in the state at 27.4 points per game, dropped a game-high 33 points to lead his team. The Daggers average over 60 points per game.
The scorching-hot Ka Makani will return to the floor against Waiakea tonight in Waimea. Junior varsity tips off first at 5:30 p.m.
Pahoa returns to action tonight against Kohala in Kapa‘au. Junior varsity also plays first at 5:30 p.m.
KSH 60, Kea‘au 33
Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i boys basketball earned its sixth consecutive win after a 60-33 rout against Kea‘au on Friday inside the Cougars’ gymnasium. The winners sank seven 3s in the win.
Kawohi Huihui, who averages 18.2 points per game for the Warriors, scored a game-high 24 points with three 3-pointers made. Teammate Kiai Yasso scored 12, while Kaikuakea Kahana-Rowe added 11.
Kea‘au had no double-digit scorers, but William Kirklin scored six, while Jaizaiah Pahinui-Willets had five. The 5-4 Cougars average over 50 points per game while allowing 42.2.
Averaging almost 66 points per game on the island, 12-3 KSH returns to the floor against Kealakehe at 5:30 p.m. tonight in Kona town. Junior varsity will play first.

Soccer: HPA 9, MLCA 0
HPA boys soccer notched a win Friday against Makua Lani Christian Academy in Kona town. Winning 9-0, Ka Makani improved to 5-2-0, while the Lions fell to 2-6-0.
Shoichi Yokoyama led the winners with a hat trick, followed by teammate Duke Waiau with two goals. Skye Raymond, Kaulia Kapuniai, Devin Cordeiro and Wyatt Knowles scored one each.
HPA will return to the pitch against Kealakehe at 6 p.m. tonight at Waverider Stadium. MLCA’s season is over, per ScoringLive.
