Seventeen motorists were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence between Jan.13 through Jan. 19, with five of the drivers involved in traffic accidents and one driver who was under legal drinking age, authorities announced.

This year, there were at least 52 DUI arrests compared to 47 around the same time last year – a 10.6% increase, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

“Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 43 major crashes so far this year, compared with 48 major collisions during the same time last year, a decrease of 10.4 percent,” the department said in a statement.

Police officials said that there have been two fatal crashes this year compared to three fatal crashes around the same time last year – a 33.3% decrease.

The non-traffic fatality count is zero compared to zero for the same time last year.

DUI-related roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
