The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) basketball season continued over the weekend across the isle. Girls Division II quarterfinals were held, along with DI and DII semifinals on Monday night. See Wednesday’s paper to read the results from the semifinals round. The girls championship matchups will be held Wednesday night at the Hilo Civic.
Boys playoffs will begin Feb. 8.
KSH 43, Honoka‘a 17
Third-seeded Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i girls basketball trounced Honoka‘a in the BIIF DII quarterfinals on Saturday in Kea‘au, winning 43-17. The Lady Warriors improved to 11-2 in the BIIF and 13-5 overall, while the Lady Dragons’ season ended at 4-11 overall.
KSH set the tone from the opening tip, out-scoring Honoka‘a 14-2 in the opening quarter. From there, the Lady Dragons could not recover.
There were eight different Lady Warriors that scored, including Melony Urbina, who scored 12. Teammates Shailan Benevides and Hereiti Delenia scored nine each. KSH averages 45.8 points per game in the BIIF this season.
No Honoka‘a player reached five points, but Ava Tabucbuc and Adehza Torres scored four apiece. The Lady Dragons finished 2024-25 averaging 34.2 points per game on the island.

Ka‘u 46, HPA 29
Ka‘u girls basketball won in dominant fashion over Hawaii Preparatory Academy in the quarterfinals of the BIIF Division II playoffs on Saturday, winning 46-29 to advance to the semifinals.
Jazmyn Navarro finished with a game-high 18 points for Ka‘u, while Ka Makani’s Rosey Wawner led the red and white with nine.
The Lady Trojans improved to 9-4 in the BIIF and 11-5 overall — averaging nearly 43 points per game while allowing under 36. They played first-seeded Kohala late Monday night inside King Kamehameha Park Gymnasium. See Wednesday’s paper to read the results.
HPA ends its season at 6-8 overall and 6-7 in the BIIF. Ka Makani averaged nearly 27 points per game in the BIIF this season.
Pahoa 57, Kea‘au 56
Pahoa boys basketball won a 57-59 nailbiter in overtime over Kea‘au on Saturday in the Daggers’ gym, improving to 5-6 overall.
Kyran Canete, the state’s top scorer at 28.2 points per game, scored a game-high 36 points for Pahoa. His top supporting teammate was Rysaiah Abadilla, who had six. The 5-6 Daggers average 59 points per game while allowing 50.5.
Cougars swingman Jaizaiah Pahinui-Willets finished with a team-high 21 points, while Thayvn Nakoa scored 10. Kea‘au fell to 5-6 after the loss, averaging nearly 49 points per game.
Next up for Pahoa is a matchup with Christian Liberty Academy slated for 6 p.m. tonight at home. The 5-6 Cougars will next face the Dragons at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Honoka‘a town. Junior varsity will tip off first.
HPA 63, Ka‘u 32
HPA boys basketball soared to another big victory on Saturday afternoon in Pahala, with Ka Makani winning 63-32. HPA has won eight straight — cementing itself as one of the island’s most formidable teams.
Vander Eberhard, who leads the team with 18 points per game, scored a team-high 11 points. Teammate Gavin Rhodes added 10 points, while Cam Root, Max Aiona IV and Kingdon Simmons all scored eight each.
Excel Bonoan led the Trojans with a game-high 16 points. Bonoan averages 20 points per game for Ka‘u this season.
In BIIF play, Ka Makani (14-5 overall, 8-1 BIIF) averages over 64 points per game while allowing 40.2. The red and white will return to the floor against local rival Parker at 6 p.m. tonight inside Castle Gymnasium.
The Trojans’ (5-11 overall, 4-9 BIIF) next matchup will be against CLA at 6 p.m. Friday at Ka‘u District Gymnasium.
KSH 79, Parker 16
KSH boys basketball won another dominant outing with a 79-16 beatdown of Parker on Saturday in Waimea. The Warriors elevated to 14-3 overall and 9-1 in the BIIF, while the Bulls sank to 3-12 overall.
KSH was the aggressor early, leading 57-10 at the half. Kaikuakea Kahana-Rowe scored 17 points, while teammate Kolten Tabuyo-Kahele had 12 with four 3-pointers made. As a team, the Warriors cashed 12 3s with all 15 of their players scoring.
Parker had no double-figure scorers, but Liam Ticarro led the way with eight points. Barry Daoust Jr. also added five.
KSH has been peaking at the right time late in the season, now winners of eight consecutive. Averaging nearly 70 points per game in BIIF competition while allowing under 40, the Warriors’ next test will be tonight at home. They’ll compete in a double-header — against Laupahoehoe at 5:30 p.m. and St. Joseph’s at 7 p.m. The matchup against the Seasiders will come after Friday’s game was postponed due to rainfall on the court.
Parker will return against HPA tonight on the road.
Kona 73, SJS 24
Konawaena boys basketball secured its third win in a row after a 73-24 rout of SJS on Saturday night in Kea‘au. The Wildcats improved to 8-3 in the BIIF and 11-10 overall. The Cardinals fell to 2-8.
Riley Asakura and Joven Young led Kona with 11 points apiece. The Wildcats average 64 points per game in league play while allowing 44.
SJS had no scorers in double figures, but was led by Koen De La Cruz eight.
Kona will next travel to the Hamakua Coast to play the Laupahoehoe Seasiders at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Cardinals will return to the floor tonight against KSH on the road.
