Polanco to re-sign with Mariners
Free-agent infielder Jorge Polanco is returning to the Seattle Mariners, multiple outlets reported. The Athletic pegged Polanco’s contract at one year for $7.75 million, adding it includes a 2026 vesting option based on plate appearances in 2025.
Fleury, Wild blank Habs
Marc-Andre Fleury, playing his final game in his home province, recorded his 76th career shutout as the visiting Minnesota Wild beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 on Thursday. Fleury made 19 saves while tying Ed Belfour and Tony Esposito for the 10th-most shutouts in NHL history. The 40-year-old veteran, who has announced this is his last season, is the first goalie in NHL history to record a shutout as a teenager and at 40 years or older.
Nebraska upsets No. 18 Illinois in OT
Brice Williams scored a game-high 27 points, including Nebraska’s last eight in overtime, as the Cornhuskers stopped No. 18 Illinois 80-74 on Thursday in Lincoln, Neb. Williams snapped a 72-72 tie on a pull-up jumper with 2:28 left, then drove for a layup at the 1:44 mark. He added a baseline jumper with 43 seconds on the clock and capped his clutch spree by sinking both ends of a one-and-one with 26.2 seconds left.
Rubiales stands trial
Former Spanish soccer chief Luis Rubiales goes on trial from Monday at Madrid’s High Court for his kiss on the lips of World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso that was watched by millions and triggered a backlash against machismo in the sport. Rubiales, 47, is accused of sexual assault and of then attempting to coerce Hermoso, 34, into declaring that the kiss had been consensual. He denies those charges.
Flyers acquire Kuzmenko
Four forwards are on the move after the Philadelphia Flyers and the Calgary Flames pulled off a trade late Thursday night. The Flames received Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee, while the Flyers got Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier and second-round draft pick this year and a seventh-round pick in 2028.
Jaguars hire Campanile as DC
The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Anthony Campanile as defensive coordinator. “Anthony Campanile represents exactly what we want to be as a defensive unit and football team,” head coach Liam Coen said in a statement issued Thursday. “He brings an aggressive defensive mindset and a system that is adaptable to our players and allows them to play fast and physical.”
Howard announces return to Fever
Three-time WNBA champion Natasha Howard is returning to the Indiana Fever, the team that selected her with the fifth overall pick of the 2014 WNBA Draft. On Friday, she posted a throwback photo of draft night on her Instagram account with the caption, “Back to where all my dreams came true.”
