The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) boys volleyball season continued over the weekend across the island. Matches resume today; see the paper all week for coverage.
KSH 3, Pahoa 1
Kamehameha Schools Hawai‘i boys volleyball got back on track after dropping a match earlier in the week to Hilo — beating the visiting Pahoa Daggers in four sets Saturday in Kea‘au.
The winning Warriors won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-20, but Pahoa avoided the sweep by squeaking out a 27-25 third-frame win. However, KSH adjusted and closed the match in the fourth set, winning 25-19.
The Warriors logged 49 kills to the Daggers’ 37. KSH’s Kameron Pua and Jaydan Borling-Lewi posted 10 kills each to lead the team. Teammate Mystiq Rosario added nine. Analu Kaholokai-Yockman dished out a match-high 38 assists on 97 attempts — finishing with a 39.2% assist percentage. As a team, the Warriors recorded six blocks.
The Daggers were led by Dayten Fujiyama with 10 kills, followed by Kyran Canete with eight. Ryden Devaney and Jheyden Haili also combined for 12 kills. Haili additionally finished with a team-high 24 assists on a 33.3% assist percentage. Pahoa logged eight team blocks.
Improving to 3-1 in the early season, KSH will next be tested against Waiakea on Wednesday in Hilo town. The Daggers dropped to 3-2, and will next face Ka‘u tonight in Pahoa town.
Hilo 3, Connections 0
Hilo boys volleyball remained unbeaten in the early season after a straight-sets rout of Hilo on Saturday morning on the road.
The victorious Vikings won by scores of 25-3, 25-6 and 25-7 — playing strong on both sides of the net to ensure the ‘Io didn’t reach double digits in points in any of the three frames played.
Hilo elevated itself to 3-0 — next facing Ka‘u on Wednesday in Pahala. Connections fell to 0-4, yet to win a set this season. The ‘Io will look to turn the tides against Kea‘au tonight inside the Cougars’ gymnasium.
