Konawaena, Hawaii Prep, Waiakea and Hilo girls flag football all competed in the first-ever Hawaii Dental Service Girls Flag Football State Championships this week on Oahu. Despite strong and memorable seasons from all four teams, each squad fell short in the opening round of the tournament, and was then diverted to the consolation bracket.
The third-seeded Lady Wildcats, who clinched the inaugural BIIF Division I championship after going undefeated in the conference, fell 39-19 to Nanakuli in Round 1 on Wednesday. The Lady Golden Hawks outclassed Kona in almost every facet of the game, as quarterback Charyssa Asisin passed for 205 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. She threw scores to Shaydenurijah Key Byrd and Carlee Sausi-Callejo. Sausi-Callejo also spent time at quarterback, throwing a touchdown to Key Byrd.
Lady Wildcats quarterback Ki‘ilei Leileiwi tossed three touchdowns and three picks to go along with 178 passing yards. She threw touchdowns to Kylie Denis, Briley Hao and Ava Shoosmith.
Nanakuli logged 293 yards of net offense to Kona’s 212.
The Lady Wildcats went on to play Waianae in the consolation field, where they also fell 35-0. Kona finished the year 9-2 overall in its first season, setting the standard for future Lady Wildcats that will be taking the field.
BIIF DII champion HPA fell to Leilehua 25-6 in the opening round Wednesday. Madie Buczyna scored the first touchdown of the outing with an eight-yard run to give Ka Makani an early 6-0 lead, but it was all the red and white could muster in the scoring department.
Lady Mules quarterback Cali Moniz-Kealoha finally got their offense going in the second half, throwing touchdowns to Maci Rivera and Madi Powell. Minei Haiola-Borges and Starlette Rose Tugaoen each hauled in pick sixes to score the final two touchdowns of the matchup.
Leilehua logged 264 yards of offense to HPA’s 168, including 219 passing yards.
At 8-3 overall, HPA ended up winning its first consolation game following being eliminated, beating Kahuku 13-0. They ended up playing Waimea in the 10th place semifinals late Friday.
Hilo fell 46-0 to fourth-seeded Kamehameha-Maui on Wednesday after being outplayed on both sides of the ball. The Lady Warriors logged 311 scrimmage yards to the Vik Queens’ -1.
KSM quarterback Tyra Shimizu threw for three touchdowns — one to Brooklyn Urayanza, another to Raejia-Li Librando and the final to Kawena Cabanting. Cabanting also caught the final touchdown pass of the night from backup quarterback Ariana Oshiro. Oshiro additionally ran for a touchdown.
Myla Tuitele and Evalani Keawekane also hauled in pick sixes for the Lady Warriors.
Hilo additionally lost to Waimea 19-0 in the consolation bracket, finishing the tournament without scoring. The Vik Queens end their inaugural season at 8-3 overall.
Waiakea fell to second-seeded KS-Kapalama in the first round by a score of 26-6 on Wednesday. KSK logged 307 yards of offense to Waiakea’s 162.
Quarterback Kaya Texeira scored Waiakea’s only points with a rushing touchdown in the second quarter.
KSK’s Hayden Kaahanui-Cera threw three touchdown passes and two picks. She threw her first score to Kylee Sivertsen, second to Alexia Medeiros and final to Kaila Miller. Kaahanui-Cera also rushed for a touchdown of her own.
Waiakea then went on to the consolation field, where they fell to Baldwin 40-8. Their season has officially concluded.
