Four Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) boys volleyball teams wrapped up their seasons on Oahu at states last weekend, capping off another great season of island play.
BIIF DII champion Hawaii Preparatory Academy earned fifth place in the state after beating local rival Parker 2-1 in the opening round of the consolation bracket. Ka Makani faced Pearl City in the fifth-place finals Saturday, winning 2-1.
HPA won by set scores of 25-23, 22-25 and 15-9. All consolation matches were held in a best-of-three format.
Ka Makani’s Kena Craven, Kahoa Kekuewa, Vasco Freitas and Cam Root combined for 29 kills to lead the team. Matteo Larrua finished with a match-high 14 bigs, while senior captain Nicholas Pigotti dished 23 assists.
Reven Otsuka heralded the Chargers with seven kills, followed by teammates Josiah Talamoa and Anthony Tyler-Madelo with 11 combined. Watson Ventura and Marley Ngrimidol combined for 25 assists for Pearl City.
HPA ends the season 13-5, winning 10 of its last 11 games after starting the year 3-4. The mid-season turnaround became one of the best stories on the Big Island this spring.
The Bulls ended their year 9-8 after falling to Ka Makani. Parker placed second in BIIF DII and finished with a two-win improvement from a year ago.
Over in Division I, BIIF DI runner-up Konawaena fell 2-1 to Campbell on Friday in the opening round of the consolation bracket for fifth overall place. The Sabers won by sets of 25-23, 20-25 and 18-16.
Camobell’s Moziax Mulipola spiked two clutch kills when the final frame was tied 16-16, giving the Sabers the win.
Julius Momoe-Mitchell led the winners with 21 kills, while Mulipola added 11. Kitiona Uli dished 42 assists.
Ellison Morgan led the Wildcats with 13 kills. Braulio Medina Magana had 11 assists.
Kona’s season ended at 13-4 overall, notching its fourth consecutive double-digit win season.
Additionally on Friday, Hilo fell 2-0 to University Lab School in the consolation bracket — falling 25-19 and 25-18. The Vikings finished the season 14-2 after winning the BIIF DI crown and going unbeaten in conference play.
