The ‘big, beautiful bill’
is fiscally irresponsible
So, let me get this straight: FEMA administrator tells us cutbacks mean states should expect to cover 50% of disaster relief.
If Congress passes the “big, beautiful bill,” states will lose $600 billion for Medicaid.
The national debt will climb so that interest on it will cost us more per year than the U.S. military budget. All this so the wealthiest in our country get a tax cut.
Think there might be a problem with the Citizens United decision of our U.S. Supreme Court?

County administration has
‘warped sense of priorities’
I am in full agreement with the point made by Colleen Nobuko Shimazu on Thursday, May 15 (Your Views, Tribune-Herald).
To waste tax dollars on nothing of importance, and to ignore necessary improvements for the Merrie Monarch Festival when it provides so much to our community and the world, is inexcusable.
This administration’s warped sense of priorities further ignores the host culture which is celebrated immensely by and during the Merrie Monarch.
Mayor Kimo Alameda and his advisers can and should do better.

Regarding proposed name
change for Hawaii Island
I came to the islands 22 years ago, and the only way my relatives and friends in South Africa, Australia, Britain and Canada know where I am is by my saying: “I don’t live on the Big island,” but I do live in Hawaii on Oahu.”
Nobody from the outer world understands that only one island is called Hawaii.
How ridiculous is that?
We are all from Hawaii. My grandson was born in Hawaii and graduated in Hawaii, but we don’t live anywhere near the Big island!
Change the name completely.
