Ohrlando’s Chamber Ensemble welcomes the new year with concert
Everybody knows Vienna is the world capital of the famous New Year’s Concert. How about turning Kailua-Kona into the capital of Hawaii’s New Years Concert with splendid classical music?
Welcome the new year with sweeping music. “Ohrlando” and his wife, Ursula, will offer a special gift to the community: A colorful bouquet of salon musique. An entertaining classical program with waltzes, polkas, dances and much more. You may dance or simply move your legs to the Viennese and Parisian salon melodies of the 19th and 20th century.
Roland Maurer will be on oboe, bassoon and saxophone, with Ursula Hesse on piano.
The concert is at 3 p.m. Sunday at a private residence in Kailua-Kona, with an after concert party. Admission is free, and a $20 per person donation is welcome.

Donkey Mill Art Center welcomes artist in residence Andrea Dezso
The Donkey Mill Art Center is excited to welcome 2019 artist-in-residence Andrea Dezso to Hawaii Island this January. Dezso will present her work to the community, teach classes for children and adults, and will learn from and collaborate with local artists during her residency.
Dezso will kick off her residency by sharing her latest illustrated book, “The Original Folk &Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm” with a Words &Wine event at Kona Stories Bookstore in Keauhou Shopping Center from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. This event is free and open to the public. On Friday, Jan. 11, Andrea will present an Aloha Friday pau hana activity at the Donkey Mill from 6-8 p.m., where students will learn how to make simple pop-up paper structures. The following week, from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 17, the Donkey Mill will host an in-depth artist talk and community potluck. This event is free and open to the public.
Students who would like to delve deeper into the art of 3D paper, pop-ups, and bookmaking should register for Tunnel Books with Andrea Dezso, a two-day workshop to be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 19-20. Families are encouraged to join the Mill for a parent and child Pop-Up Cards &Books workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26. Space in the workshops and activities is limited, so please call 322-3362 to register.

Art-After-Dark
returns in 2019
Roll in the new year this Friday, from 5:30-8:30 p.m., as Holualoa Village galleries feature new art and artists, tasty street eats and music all along Mamalahoa Highway during their monthly Art-After-Dark event. This community event is free, and for all ages.
At Holualoa Gallery, artists and owners, Matthew and Mary Lovein will be present with featured artist, William Wingert painting live. Kona Dogs Gourmet Street Food will be alongside the gallery, along with musician John Collins.
Glyph Art Gallery will be hosting the dramatic landscape photography of Don Slocum out front, along with Sundog Bread. In the gallery, look for a new hand painted silk scarf collection from Gabrielle Bayer and new work from Margaret Barnaby, Andrea Pro and others.
Dr. Tim and Friends will be performing outside Ipu Arts Plus Gallery, at the north end of Holualoa.
Dave Lawrence will be pumping classic rock n’ roll at Koa Realty and the Holualoa Ukulele Gallery will host popular Hawaiian and contemporary tunes by Mauka High Notes on its front lanai.
New members of the Waimea Arts Council
to be featured at Firehouse Gallery
During the month of January, the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea will feature an exhibit of the works of the newest artist members of the Waimea Arts Council. All of these artists are accomplished in their medium and we are delighted to welcome them to our organization.
Angela Andreoff, a contemporary artist, creates most of her art using acrylic paint or oil pastels; David Blevins is a wood crafter and often uses koa wood scraps to custom-make boxes and other wood creations with amazing expertise and quality craftsmanship; Carolyn Dierickx creates fashionable earrings and necklaces; Kimberly Horn creates unique beaded bracelets, leis and other jewelry; Joshua Gerbert’s painting style is distinctive, especially his use of vivid and bright colors in his acrylic paintings, mostly depicting Hawaiian nature; Susan Grant is an accomplished watercolorist; Sui Lan Gomez uses pastels to draw animals, people and the beauty of Hawaii. The Arts Council also gained four very talented photographers: Shirley De Rego, Keahi Incillio, Peter French and Robert Shallenberger.
The back gallery will exhibit art created by Terry Bensch, Pat Dinsman, Peter French, Marie Kinchla and Norma Watt.
There will be a reception for the artists at the Firehouse Gallery from 3-5 p.m. Saturday. Friends and the public are cordially invited.

Straight No Chaser to perform at the Kahilu
A cappella group Straight No Chaser will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at Kahilu Theatre.
If the phrase “male a cappella group” conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses, think again. Straight No Chaser are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fanbase, numerous national TV appearances and proven success with album releases.
Tickets are $69.50/$59.50/ $39.50 and all price levels will increase by $5.50 on the day of the show. Tickets are available at kahilutheatre.org, by phone at 885-6868, or in person at the Kahilu Theatre Box Office.
