Waikoloa Reservoir No. 1 repairs meeting planned
KAILUA-KONA — The Hawaii County Department of Water Supply will hold a meeting on the long-awaited repairs project at Waikoloa Reservoir No. 1, the department announced in a press release.
DWS has scheduled the meeting for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Waimea Community Center, located at 65-1260 Kawaihae Road in Kamuela. The release noted that project details, schedule and other information will be provided at the meeting.
Waikoloa Reservoir No. 1 was one of several structures damaged during earthquakes that impacted the Big Island in October 2006.
The reservoir remained operational, filled only halfway due to damage to its upper regions, while Waikoloa Reservoir No. 2 underwent full repairs. The latter reservoir suffered damage down to its floor.
Repairs on Waikoloa Reservoir No. 2 were completed in 2011. The department told West Hawaii Today in a 2011 story that work was expected to commence and be completed on Waikoloa Reservoir No. 1 in 2012, but unspecified delays pushed the project back several years.

Montessori Education Center plans open house
The Montessori Education Center of Hawaii invites the public to an open house Jan. 26 at its Waimea school.
Teachers and staff will be on-hand to answer questions and give tours of the comprehensive learning environment from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
MECH, which has been serving North Hawaii since 1984, is located at 65-1197 Opelo Road in Waimea. Montessori Education Center of Hawaii is currently serving children ages 2 to 7 in Waimea.

Wavy frame artist
to paint live
Famed wavy frame artist Steve Barton will be painting live at the Queens’ MarketPlace on Jan. 23 and 24.
The public is invited to watch Barton paint a few surfboards during his two-day paint demonstration at Genesis Galleries Hawaii. He will work from 2 to 6 p.m. both days.
Barton paints dreamlike lively joyful landscapes and scapes of Hawaii’s beautiful coastlines. A positive upbeat lifestyle is portrayed in every brush stroke.

Mauna Kea Quilter meeting Feb. 9
Mauna Kea Quilters, started in 1997, is a group of patchwork quilters who enjoy sharing our love of quilting with others.
Each year we donate many quilts to help raise money for worthwhile organizations in our area such as Malaai (The Culinary Garden of Waimea Middle School) and Relay for Life. We have provided quilts to the police/fire department and North Hawaii Community Hospital for those in need. At Christmas we make quilted stockings and quilts for needy children.
We welcome you to join us for our monthly meetings on the second Saturday of the month (Feb. 9) from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the meeting room of the Thelma Parker Memorial Library.

Houser earns
Baylor honor roll
Sarah Houser, a College of Arts and Sciences student at Baylor University and of Honokaa was named to the Dean’s Academic Honor Roll for the 2018 fall semester. Students honored on the Dean’s List are Baylor undergraduates with a minimum grade-point average of 3.7, while enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours.
Baylor University is a private Christian university and a nationally ranked research institution.

Waimea resident Allie Shiraki recently earned her bachelor of science degree in dietetics from the University of North Colorado.
The fall 2018 commencement ceremonies were held Dec. 7 and 8, 2018.
Public Dharma talk slated
Noted Buddhist teacher, author, and founder of the Dharmata Foundation Anam Thubten will lead teaching events Feb. 1 to 3 at the Kohala Institute at Iole in Kapaau.
At 7 p.m. Feb. 1, Thubten will offer a free public Dharma talk where Thubten will speak about three important aspects of meditation: mindful attention, open awareness, and loving kindness.
He will also lead an in-depth weekend retreat on Feb. 2-3 at the institute. Advance registration required; cost is $150.
