KAILUA-KONA — Some came to run, while others came to swim. The ambitious ones did both, while some just wanted to paddle on a boogie board or jog with their dog.
There was even one extra-adventurous Pea-ticipant who plodded his way on crutches.
There simply was something for everyone at the monthly free Peaman event at Kailua Pier on Sunday morning. The no-pressure races are built upon having fun and inclusiveness.
Papa Pea’s Sizzling Summer Sprint Biathlon included a 1/2-mile swim and 3.1-mile run. There was also a shorter course for the keiki.
The free event also helped celebrate the birthday of Bill “Papa Pea” Pagett — father of local racing icon, Peaman.
Papa Pea was known by many names: Hollywood Bill, Finish By Any Means Bill, The Angry Swimmer Bill and even I-Love-Baby-Chickens-But-You-Better-Not-Tell-Anyone Bill. They were all versions of the man who made an impression on so many people during his lifetime.
However, the name that Bill Pagett was fondly known by in the community of Kailua-Kona was “Papa Pea.”
Bill Pagett passed away in 2015, but the spirit of the multi-Ironman finisher still lives on through the events.
“A ton of fun has been had and will continue to be had,” Peaman said during a celebration of life for his father in 2015. “He is going to be at every Peaman race for the rest of time, shining on us.”
That has proved true, every step of the way.
