Kahua Ranch reunion DVD released

Sponsored by North Kohala Community Resource Center (NKCRC), Living Journals’ mission is to capture the history of Kohala communities. Its latest project is a DVD, “Families Coming Home: Kahua Ohana Ranch Reunion,” featuring last June’s event, along with a history of the ranch and tributes to the people who helped make it thrive. It also includes interviews with Ho’opai, Keli’ikuli, Lincoln and Kai’amakini family members.

New emergency signal informational meeting scheduled

Residents, including Neighborhood Watch and CERT group members, are urged to attend an informational presentation led by HEMA from 6-7:30 p.m. tonight at North Hawaii Community Hospital’s Mauna Loa-Mauna Kea Room about Waimea’s new emergency attack warning signal. Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HEMA), formally known as Hawaii State Civil Defense Agency, will sound and incorporate the new signal into the regular First of the Month test of the Emergency Alert Siren System at 11:45 a.m. this Friday.

Waimea Consort puts on free holiday concert

At 7 p.m. this Friday, Waimea Consort will perform a free a cappella celebration at Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Davies Chapel. All community members are invited to attend.

Holiday celebration planned in Honokaa

This Friday from 5:30-7:30 p.m., the Honokaa Business Association will host the annual holiday celebration on Mamane Street. Holiday songs will be performed by the Kamehameha Preschoolers, Seniors Club, Ka Hale Ona Keiki Preschoolers, Waldorf School students and the Hawaiian Cultural Center of Hamakua Halau.

Hawaii-made ‘Crafty Hands & Gifts Too!’ coming this Saturday

From 9 a.m.– 4 p.m. Saturday, locally made items by dozens of island artisans will be for sale at Thelma Parker Gym. Plate lunches and other food, music and drawings will be offered throughout the day. Attendees are urged to bring and donate a canned or non-perishable food item at the craft fair to be given to the Annunciation Food Pantry.

Santa visits and free photos begin Saturday

Families can bring keiki to the Fireside Food Court at Parker Ranch Center in Waimea for a visit with Kanakaloka directly following the Twilight Parade. A free goody bag will be given to participants, while supplies last.

Waimea Teen Tech Tutors serve the community

From 10:30-12:30 p.m. this Sunday, tech-savvy high school students from HPA, Parker, Kamehameha and Honokaa High will provide basic tips and practical information to kupuna for using phones, personal electronic devices, laptops, Kindles, email, Facebook, Instagram and Google Search at St. James’ Episcopal Church.

Filing domestic violence restraining orders becomes easier

Ex parte petition forms for temporary restraining orders (TRO) can now be dropped off at the South Kohala District Courthouse in Waimea. Victims can access the form 24/7 at the Waimea police station. After hours, the dispatch can be contacted via a phone by the door to request a TRO packet. Petitioners’ address and phone number be kept confidential.

Mouse House on display

Now through Jan. 6, the miniature hand-crafted village celebrates the spirit of the holiday season at Isaacs Art Center in Waimea. Toy stores, markets, fruit and vegetable stands, art and candy shops are “peopled” with tiny wooden mice scurrying to take flight as the reindeer on Santa’s sleigh. The Christmas panorama reflects the imagination and talent of beloved island painter and rancher Martha Greenwell. Artifacts featured in the display were assembled over eight years from the attic and tool shed of Greenwell’s Palani Ranch.

Solar Matter Bike Rally set for Friday

From 4-6 p.m. this Friday, bikers and walkers can join in the Blue Zones Project — North Hawaii activity to learn about renewable energy, safety and bike sharing.

NHCH names employee of the quarter

Ryan Gentry, a certified surgical technician in the hospital’s surgical services department, was named North Hawaii Community Hospital’s employee of the quarter at a hospital ceremony with co-workers in mid-October.

Community service day at Puako Boat Ramp Wednesday

Volunteers are invited to cleanup land around Puako Bay, the adjacent facility and Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail beginning at 8:45 a.m. this Wednesday. The group will meet at Puako Boat Ramp. Waivers, orientation, a choose of pick up sites and cleanup supplies will be provided.

Coffee with a Cop heads to Waikoloa Village

From 8-10 a.m. this Friday, Officer May Lee will join neighbors for coffee and conversation at Island Lava Java in the Waikoloa Village Shopping Center. There is no agenda or speeches planned, just a chance to ask questions, voice concerns and get to know the officers in the neighborhood.

St. James Christmas Bazaar kicks off the holiday season

From 9 a.m.-1 p.m. this Saturday, St. James Episcopal Church, Waimea Country School and Small World Preschool will host a Christmas Store and Boutique including baked goods and preserves, food booths, a plant sale and produce.
