Oahu-based military units will convoy from Pohakuloa Training Area to Kawaihae Harbor on Jan. 26, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. via Saddle Road, Mamalahoa Highway, Waikoloa Road, Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Akoni Pule corridor.

The convoys include large military vehicles, some with trailers. Motorists are advised to be alert and drive with care.

Part of the building, the former Kona Bakery, collapsed after the lower, two-story section at the northwest corner, caught fire, the Fire Department said. No neighboring buildings were threatened by the blaze.

No damage estimate was available Monday. No one was injured.

The fire closed the highway between Konawaena School Road and Keekee Street at 7:30 p.m. and reopened at 9:05 p.m., Hawaii County Civil Defense officials said.

Man charged in 1989 murder of woman, 81

HONOLULU — A Honolulu man has been charged with murder and sex assault in a decades-old killing of an 81-year-old woman.

Evidence recovered through DNA technology led to the arrest last week of Gerald Austin, 52, who was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree sex assault in the death of Edith Skinner. Skinner, 81, was found in a Honolulu senior housing complex on July 25, 1989.

Austin remained held on $200,000 bail after his initial appearance in District Court on Monday. He is being held at Oahu Community Correctional Center.

The case remained cold until investigators found new evidence in 2006.

Skinner’s body was found in her apartment by the resident manager after worried friends didn’t see her at breakfast. A man described as 19 to 25 years old was seen leaving her unit at about 5 a.m., police said.
