Yoshino Horio

Yoshino Horio, 102, of Hilo, died March 21 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Feb. 1, 1910, in Papaikou, she was a housewife. She was a member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and Upper Kaumana Kumiai.

Private services were held. The family requests no flowers or monetary donations.

She is survived by sons, Harry Horio, of Hilo, Kenneth (Etsuko) Horio, of Hilo; daughters, Nancy Nagai, of Hilo, Daisy (Norman) Kujubu, of Sacramento, Calif.; sisters, Ayame Fujiyama, of Hilo, Sumie (Tsutomu) Tanaka, of Hakalau, Mildred Lau, of California; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Kazue Fujii

Kazue “Kay” Fujii, 83, of Honolulu, formerly of Hilo, died March 13 at Hale Ola Kino in Honolulu. Born Sept. 5, 1928, in Hilo, she was formerly a nurse with Dr. Ruben Casile’s office in Hilo.

Private services were held.

She is survived by husband, Richard Fujii, of Kaneohe, Oahu; daughters, Evelyn (Layne) Machida, of Aiea, Oahu, Donna (Joel) Tanabe, of Hilo; hanai daughter, Joanne (Eugene) Yamada, of Mililani, Oahu; brothers, Norio (Rosey) Harada, Bunichi (Hideyo) Harada, both of Hilo; sisters, Asayo Naguwa, of Hilo, Martha (Hubei) Kaji, of Torrance, Calif., June (Albert) Nakagawa, of Pearl City, Oahu; three grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

John Basham III

John Ellis Basham III, 62, of Hilo, died March 24 at Hilo Medical Center. He was born Sept. 6, 1949, in Topeka, Kan.

No services will be held. Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

He is survived by mother, Jessie Basham, of Topeka, Kan.; brother, Richard Basham, of Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Barbara Basham, of Koloa, Kauai.

Charles Cowpland

Charles Connor Cowpland, 84, of Papaikou, died March 31 at his residence. Born June 16, 1927, in Dallas, he was a commercial fisherman, “Finest Kind” boat captain, Hilo Trollers member and Army veteran during WWII and the Korean War.

Private services were held. Contributions can be made to Hospice of Hilo.

He is survived by spouse, Donna Cowpland, of Papaikou; daughters, Grace (Rex) Sulsberger, of Morrill, Neb., Gail (Jerryl Mauhili) Cowpland, of Papaikou; son, Scott Cowpland, of Key West, Fla.; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.
