Kaiser Permanente Hawaii sponsors drug take-back days in April

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, in partnership with the state Narcotics Enforcement Division and Attorney General’s Office, is offering drug take-back days, which offer the community — Kaiser Permanente members and nonmembers — the opportunity to properly dispose of medications that are either expired or not being used, in an effort to prevent prescription drug abuse or improper disposal.

The scheduled take-back times are 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. April 25 at Kaiser Permanente — Kona Clinic, 75-184 Hualalai Road; 1 to 4 p.m. April 25 at the South Kona Clinic, 81-6350 Mamalahoa Highway, Unit 2, Kealakekua; and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. April 26, at the Waimea Clinic, 67-1185A Mamalahoa Highway.

Ka‘u Coffee Festival adds three events to
annual celebration

The Ka‘u Coffee Festival kicks off at 5 p.m. May 5 with Ka‘u Farmers’ Table: A Feast for the Senses hosted by Kalaekilohana Bed and Breakfast. The event features an intimate evening with Hawaiian entertainer Robert Cazimero and Executive Chef Morgan Starr of Mi’s Italian Bistro. The locally sourced fare includes a paired five-course gourmet meal and a Ka‘u coffee dessert bar. Tickets are $100 in advance. For information and tickets, contact Kalaekilohana at 939-8052.

A recipe contest for cookies, candies and crackers made with Ka‘u coffee will be held at 2 p.m. May 6 at Ka‘u Coffee Mill on Wood Valley Road above Pahala. The fourth annual Ka‘u Coffee Festival Hoolaulea, scheduled for May 12, features the Ka‘u Coffee Experience in Pahala. Attendees can sample Ka‘u coffees prepared in a wide variety of brewing methods while chatting with 2011 U.S. Barista Champion Pete Licata. Festival highlights include day-long live entertainment, plus hula, local food and crafts, farm and mill tours and plenty of Ka‘u coffee. Festival entry is free. On May 13, the Ka‘u Coffee College returns with its reverse trade mission and educational series. Notable guest speakers include Jeff Taylor, co-founder of PT’s Coffee Roasting Company in Ann Arbor, Mich., and Anthony Carroll, manager of Coffee Quality for Starbucks. Dr. Robert Hollingsworth, research entomologist with the USDA-Agricultural Research Service, will share strategies for controlling the coffee berry borer.

Snorkel day slated for people with disabilities

Deep & Beyond, a ministry of Youth With a Mission — University of the Nations, is having its monthly snorkel day for people with disabilities from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 20 at Kahaluu Beach Park. Certified professional volunteers will be on hand to assist people of all ages using adaptive equipment provided by county Department of Parks and Recreation. Participants and their families will share a potluck lunch at this free event.
