An autopsy on Tuesday confirmed a 17-year-old Keaau boy drowned while swimming Friday in waters off Puna, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
John Joel Buentipo was swimming near Keaau’s Shipman Beach when he reportedly experienced difficulties in the water and was unable to swim to shore. Fire rescue personnel conducted searches and located his body on Saturday, according to the department.
