A 68-year-old Hilo man was airlifted to North Hawaii Community Hospital with serious injuries Thursday, after he crashed a two-seater airplane in Ookala.

Police said the man was attempting to make an emergency landing on a newly planted corn field on Ookala Dairy Road, near mile marker 30 on Hawaii Belt Road, after his two-seat single-engine propeller airplane reportedly lost power because of engine failure. Fire Department rescue personnel extricated him from the plane.

The man, whose identity was not immediately released, was alone in the plane.

A Federal Aviation Administration investigator was expected to arrive at the scene later Thursday.

The Fire Department reported no fuel spill was noted, and no fire. — WHT
