Road, hospital closed as Pahala fire still uncontained

Fire and emergency responders to the Pahala fire are advising motorists that Highway 11 is closed at the Ka‘u Hospital. The hospital is closed and has been evacuated. Residents are being advised by to seek medical treatment in Kona or Hilo, depending upon which side of the closure they are on, said Mary Stancill, East Hawaii Medical Center spokesman.

At 12:14 p.m. Fire Department sources reported there are two fires, a 1,900-acre burn area that is 40 percent contained and a smaller 400-acre burn that is 60 percent contained.
