A Kailua-Kona man died from injuries he suffered in a single motor vehicle crash on June 11 off Old Mamalahoa Highway in Kailua-Kona, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Police identified him as William Lawrence, 58, of Kailua-Kona.

Responding to an 8:38 p.m. call on June 11, Kona patrol officers determined Lawrence was working on a 1993 Toyota Tacoma truck when the vehicle began to roll downhill. In an attempt to stop the truck from rolling, Lawrence was pulled under the vehicle as it picked up speed, causing him to get caught under the vehicle, which subsequently landed on top of him after striking a rock wall, police said.

Lawrence was taken to The Queen’s Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:08 p.m. June 14, police said.

Traffic enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Because this death occurred on a private road, it is not counted toward the official traffic fatality count.
